Directions to plot and tree tag:
Tree is about 60m south of Blue Ridge Parkway, just NE of the Humpback Rocks Picnic Area. Tagged tree is a Quercus rubra of 61 cm dbh with tag #492. Conduit is at a bearing of 60 degrees and 8.5 m from tree.
Plot location was pre-selected by the project's stratified random sampling design.
This is a maturing hardwood forest dominated by Quercus rubra. Associates include Quercus prinus, Quercus alba, and Betula lenta. The herb layer is dominated by Dennstaedtia punctilobula and there is bedrock and many cobbles showing. The community is on a somewhat steep NW slope. There is a significant amount of Castanea dentata in the shrub layer. There is abundant evidence of gypsy moth dieback.
