Observation Narrative ? Directions to plot and tree tag: Park on Rt. 43. Start out low to avoid ravine between the road and the plot. Walk to the S slope on the far side of the ravine. Tagged tree is a Quercus prinus of 28 cm dbh with tag #405. Conduit is at a bearing of 226 degrees and 1 m from tree. Plot location was pre-selected by the project's stratified random sampling design. This is a Quercus prinus community on a dry, south-facing slope. The shrub layer is very densely populated with Kalmia latifolia. The herb layer is very sparse, being composed mainly of hardwood seedlings and Kalmia. There are several recently killed hemlocks within the plot, and many large, dead hemlocks in the ravine downslope. Bedrock outcroppings are abundant.
