Directions to plot and tree tag:
The assigned coordinates for plot 70 fell upon Howardsville Pike, thus we moved the plot 50m north. From the road drain on the SE side of the road, take a bearing of true north and follow it for 50m to the tree. Tagged tree is a Quercus rubra of 59 cm dbh with tag #315. Conduit is at a bearing of 116 degrees and 3 m from tree.
Plot location was pre-selected by the project's stratified random sampling design.
This is a N-facing oak-hickory forest that is very dry at the time of sampling (drought). Many of the herbs are wilting and otherwise showing signs of drought stress. The herb layer is sparse in distribution, but still species rich. The shrub layer is also sparse. There is some evidence of gypsy- moth-killed trees within the plot, but much more can be seen outside the plot.
