Directions to plot and tree tag:
Plot location was pre-selected by the project's stratified random sampling design.
From BLRI Parkway, walk west up slope to where the steepness decreases greatly. The tree is upslope of the gradient change. Tagged tree is a Quercus prinus of 37 cm dbh with tag #323. Conduit is at a bearing of 67 degrees and 1 m from tree.
This is an oak-hickory-pine forest in which the Pinus virginiana are dying and several large oaks have been killed by gypsy moths and storms. There is one large Pinus strobus dead and outside the plot, and there are many young ones coming in. Skidder mounds (?) indicate that the area was logged prior to the establishment of the existing trees.
Percent cover of the combined tree, the shrub and herb strata were not recorded in the field but estimated from cover classes.
