Observation Narrative
Directions to plot and tree tag:
Plot location was pre-selected by the project's stratified random sampling design.
Tag tree stands on crest of roadcut berm just above BRP left. Park south of plot near center of curve to the right. Tagged tree is a Liriodendron tulipifera of 76.2 cm dbh with tag # 413. Conduit is at a bearing of 360 degrees and 0.16 m from tree.
Somewhat disturbed stand of successional Liriodendron with scattered large Carya ovalis. Far end of plot (what would be modules 4 and 7 especially) has experienced considerable canopy disturbance, and understory light availability and CWD are much higher here. Vegetation is likely typical of that along this moderately low elevation terrain along the BRP south of the James. Actaea racemosa var. racemosa and Osmorhiza suggest somewhat higher soil fertility than other proximate sites. Although many forbs appear to have been heavily browsed, there is no obvious browse line in sapling stratum.
Silt loam.
Soil is very loosely consolidated in upper -10cm of profile, very dry, medium brown, with clods 1-15mm. Although rocky, it is not always shallow; fine roots often limit depth penetration.
Rocks look like gneiss
