Observation Narrative
Directions to tag tree (including any notes on best access route): Very challenging to access. Best access is to take 43 out of Bedford, then to turn on road to Peaks of Otter. When at Junction (illegible). Tagged tree is a Betula lenta of 34 cm dbh with tag # 39. Conduit is at a bearing of 50 degrees and 12m from tree.
Plot location was pre-selected by the project's stratified random sampling design.
Dryish forest with mostly acidic soils - different from basic soils just on other side of ridge. Probably logged and possibly grazed before park establishment. Now protected, but adjacent areas show signs of lack of oak regeneration and Acer rubrum invasion. Fire absent.
Woody cover data was not collected in the field. Canopy height was not measure, but is between 20 and 35 m.
