Directions to plot and tree tag:
Park along southbound Rt. 43 where a manhole is located near a stream. Walk along stream about 70m, then travel southward up the slope on the opposite side of stream for about 200m. Tagged tree is a Quercus prinus of 35 cm dbh with tag #408. Conduit is at a bearing of 25 degrees and 1.5 m from tree.
Plot location was pre-selected by the project's stratified random sampling design.
This is an oak-hickory forest with an open canopy due to gypsy moths. A very large Carya has fallen in recent years and it is lying diagonally through the center of the plot. The living trees in the canopy are severely munched by gypsy moths. The shrub layer is sparse in most places. There is only moderate cover of herbs, but they are fairly diverse.
Cover by strata was collected in cover classes in the field . Actual percentages were estimated for entry into database.
