Observation Narrative
Discretionary plot to capture wooded, spring-fed, gravelly seep, open saturated forest. Ephemeral stream running through seep with gravel substrate. Large rocks / boulders throughout, moss covered, canopy openings dominated by Carex spp. Cicuta patch dominant. Surrounded by montane oak-hickory forest. Canopy of seep dominated by Betula alleghaniensis, with moderately dense Lindera as shrub layer. Should be revisited in the spring.
Directions to plot and tree tag: Park at Dripping Rock pull off. Take trail to spring (has sign re. filtering water) 15m on trail from spring to low point, 180 degrees, 29ft to conduit and witness tree, a multi-stemmed Betula alleghaniensis. Tagged tree is a Betula alleghaniensis with three trunks of 3,10, and 15 cm dbh with tag # 434. Conduit is at the base of the tree.
