Directions to plot and tree tag:
From 12 o’clock Knob take NW side ridge to Flat bench. Where bench begins to flatten and faces due N - look on W. edge for Carolina hemlock on Rocky Knob. Tagged tree has orange and black flagging. Tagged tree is a Quercus prinus of 56 cm dbh with tag #437. Conduit is at a bearing of 326 degrees and 4 m from tree.
Plot location was selected in the field by DNH Ecologists.
Slope on a bench of side ridge. Dominated by chestnut oak with Tsuga carolina in subcanopy. Many species in subcanopy. Other side of ridge is dominated by Liriodendron. Kalmia is dominant shrub in sample and becomes more dense downslope. Chestnut oak - Carolina hemlock continues on W slope with larger trees and with Kalmia and Rhododendron catawbiense. Sample is somewhat transitional between the two communities (successional Liriodendron + Chestnut + Tsuga).
