Directions to plot and tree tag:
James River Valley Overlook, Benchmark 1871Park at James River Valley Overlook. Proceed north along BRP ca. 200m. Point located on NE-facing slope on left side of BRP, ca. 50m form edge of road. Tagged tree is a Liriodendron tulipifera of 178 cm dbh with tag #340. Conduit is at a bearing of 210 degrees, and 10 m from tree.
Plot location was selected in the field by DNH Ecologists.
Low-elevation oak-hickory forest with sparse herb layer that lacks typically mesophytic species. Despite cool aspect and relatively sheltered topographic position, convexity of slope and rocky, shallow soil contribute to relatively dry conditions. Although stand contains several large (>50 cm dbh) trees, composition and structure are somewhat heterogeneous, even with 0.1ha plot, and disturbance has created numerous small gaps. Patchily dense Sassafras reflects less recent disturbance.
Near road - convexity with large trees and few exotics.
Canopy height was not measured, but tallest trees are > 20 m< 35 m. Other strata heights were not recorded in the field, but entered in the database as the maximum height. Percentage cover by stratum was not measured in the field, actual strata percentages and stratum cover classes for database entry were estimated by examining cover classes for individual species.
