Observation Narrative
A most unusual stand. Betula alleghaniensis is the leading tree species, although it is subordinate in the canopy to Quercus rubra and successional Liriodendron tulipifera. The herb layer is strongly dominated by ferns, chiefly Osmunda cinnamomea, Thelypteris noveboracensis, and Athyrium filix-femina var. asplenioides. Although no other species indicate especially fertile conditions, this stand supports a remarkably large population of Euphorbia purpurea (estimated at ca. 750 individuals), most of which extends upslope onto Jefferson National Forest land. Seepage headwaters of intermittent branch of Stony Creek are located adjacent to plot on the northeastern side, and subterranean seepage may influence soil moisture in stand. Other than Betula alleghaniensis, few species are characteristic of high elevation seepage swamp communities. Adjacent concave slopes on other side of Blue Ridge Parkway formerly supported mature Tsuga canadensis forest, and Tsuga component of plot was once likely higher.
Plot location was selected in the field by DNH Ecologists.
Directions to plot:
Plot located ca. 100 m south along BRP from point (ca. MP 80.5) where gated Forest Service road crosses. Look for shallow but pronounced ravine and proceed upslope to the northwest.
Tagged tree is a Betula lenta of 60cm dbh with tag # 342. Conduit is at a bearing of 171 degrees and 3m from tree.
