Plot selected in the field by DNH Ecologist, targeting acidic cove forests of the southern Blue Ridge
Hemlock - Hardwood forest with dense Rhododendron maximum. Hemlock infected with adelgid and dying. Defoliation of large hemlocks has caused a canopy gap allowing herbaceous growth - mostly Mitchella repens but also a few exotic weeds from road side. Magnolia tripetala is common in subcanopy. Canopy is hemlock mixed with Quercus alba, Quercus rubra, Nyssa sylvatica, Betula lenta, and Acer rubrum. Mature stand with large Rhododendron and large diameter canopy trees.
