Observation Narrative
A very oligotrophic, pine dominated ridge crest directly above and on the south side of the Blue Ridge Parkway, 0.2 mi east of Quarry Overlook. Surface stones and boulders are absent here. Lack of exposed mineral soil precludes the establishment of forbs and graminoids. Pines no doubt owe their establishment to past fire. Pinus pungens about 30 cm dbh. Stems of Gaylussacia baccata and Pieris floribunda may exceed 1 m, but all were assigned to the herb stratum.
