Observation Narrative
Vegetation appears to represent a localized but natural, graminoid-rich woodland, transitional between more open and evidently disturbed ridgecrest and more closed but still stunted mixed oak/heath forest downslope. This community may represent a variant of the Quercus rubra - Quercus prinus / Deschampsia flexuosa - Danthonia compressa - Calamagrostis porteri Woodland, which has been attributed to but never quantitatively documented from xeric, infertile crests in the western Ridge and Valley. Plot was placed off the crest of the ridge to limit the inclusion of canopy gaps (presumably resulting from wind and ice damage) and abundance of what appears to be Festuca rubra. A few snags are present and a gap in module 8 measures 30-40 sq. m. Some oaks in vicinity seem to have experienced defoliation by gypsy moth this season; defoliation is mild in this stand, and there is no evidence of caterpillars. Virtually all trees are of sprout origin. Apparently restricted extent of graminoid-dominated ground cover limited plot size to 400 sq. m. Soil is very rocky and shallow.
0 - 1 - litter
1 - 2 - duff
2 - dark brown, dry, rocky, very fine sandy loam, with little clay content; sample from module 8 has higher clay content and faint reddish hue
