Observation Narrative
Plot location: top of massive exposed outcrop 0.4 miles E of Lunenburg/ Brunswick Co. line on Rt. 711.
Field estimate from topo: (UTME): 766858 (UTMN):4093796.
This plot is located on a massive, several-acre granite exposure; it was positioned to capture the environment and vegetation on a relatively undisturbed, stable, sub-level portion near the upslope edge of the outcrop. No mineral soil is present here but well-developed moss and lichen mats provide a foothold for 26 species of vascular plants, of which Schizachyrium scoparium, Selaginella rupestris, Talinum teretifolium, Minuartia glabra, Opuntia humifusa, Croton willdenowii, Cyperus granitophilus, and Panicum philadelphicum are most characteristic.
Some significant lichens and bryophytes in the plot are Cladina mitis, Cladonia cf. apoda, Cladonia chlorophea, crustose lichens, Grimmia sp., 2 unknown moss species, Polytrichum sp., and Xanthoparmelia conspersa.
