Observation Narrative
Plot location: top of massive exposed outcrop 0.5 miles ENE of Lunenburg / Brunswick County line on Rt. 711.
This plot is located on an outlying opening of a massive, several-acre granite outcrop complex; it was positioned to capture the environment and vegetation on a narrow, moderately sloping portion near the upslope edge of the "flatrock". No mineral soil is present here but well-developed moss and lichen mats provide a foothold for 12 species of vascular plants. Branches of shrubby Juniperus virginiana overhang the plot, while Opuntia humifusa and Hypericum gentianoides have the greatest vascular "herb" cover. Saxifraga virginiensis is locally abundant in a small area that appears to have periodic but ephemeral seepage.
The plot contains the following significant mosses and lichens: Cladina mitis, Cladonia cf. apoda, Cladonia chlorophea, crustose lichens, Dicranum sp., Grimmia sp., Hedwigia ciliata, Peltigera sp., and Xanthoparmelia conspersa.
