Observation Narrative
Plot location: top of massive exposed outcrop 0.5 miles ENE of Lunenburg/ Brunswick Co. line on Rt. 711.
This plot is located on an outlying opening of a massive, several-acre granite outcrop complex; it was positioned to capture the environment and vegetation on a stable, relatively level portion near the upslope edge of the "flatrock". A well-developed mat of mineral soil is present over ca. 25% of the plot area. This and well-developed soil and lichen mats support 19 species of vascular plants. In contrast to the other herbaceous plots at this site, the bunch-grasses Schizachyrium scoparium is clearly dominant here, a function of greater soil development.
The following significant mosses and lichena are in the plot: Cladina mitis, Cladonia cf. apoda, Cladonia uncialis, crustose lichens, Grimmia sp., Hedwigia ciliata, moss sp., Polytrichum sp. (abundant), and Xanthoparmelia conspersa.
