Observation Narrative
Plot location: just N of massive exposed outcrop 0.4 miles E of Lunenburg/Brunswick Co. line on Rt. 711.
The vegetation in this plot is a xeric, scrubby, open woodland occupying a very gentle upland slope between large granitic exposures. Soil is evidently shallow to bedrock but relatively high in pH and base status (especially Ca). The woodland is dominated by Carya ovalis, C. glabra, Juniperus virginiana, and Quercus spp. The herb layer is characterized by a dense clone of low Rhus aromatica and abundant graminoids, particularly Piptochaetium avenaceum, Danthonia spicata, and Dichanthelium boscii. This vegetation has strong similarities to open forests/woodlands on Piedmont sites with pronounced hardpan subsoils.
