Observation Narrative
Plot location: 0.4 miles NNE of jct. Rtes. 626 and 705, off Rt. 705 near Pea Hill Creek.
Plot located on property acquired by The Nature Conservancy to protect several relatively large, granitic flatrocks. This sample is centered on a slight depression, which holds several cm of standing water during wet periods (5% of habitat was covered by 1 cm of water on date of sampling). Sparse herbaceous vegetation is rooted in shallow mats of sand and silt in the depression, and of mosses and lichens on slightly higher ground. Dominant herbs include Diamorpha smallii (vernal aspect), Portulaca smallii, Diodia teres, Talinum teretifolium, Schizachyrium scoparium (higher mats), and Andropogon virginicus (higher mats).
Notable mosses and lichens found in the plot: Cladina mitis, Cladonia caroliniana, crustose lichens, Grimmia sp., Polytrichum sp. (abundant), and Xanthoparmelia conspersa.
