Observation Narrative
Plot located on colluvial slope between narrow, rock-strewn ravine that extends nearly to summit of Buffalo Mountain and mature Quercus rubra - Betula spp. / Rhododendron maximum forest just below base of cliffs on north face. Microtopography is characteristically variable, and module 9 includes small, very steep gully ca. 2.5 m deep. Some past disturbance is evident, especially in module 2, but coarse woody debris is relatively low for such vegetation, and Acer spicatum is but a minor component. Although this stand appears to extend for some distance downslope, plot could be no wider than 20 m to avoid dense Rhododendron (sampled in plot BUFF012P), so square design of 400 sq. m was implemented.
