Observation Narrative
This stream branch was explored in search of unusual seep sampled by Gary Fleming and bearing striking similarity to calcareous seeps of the Ridge and Valley. It was later determined that the seep in question is located farther up this drainage than this plot. Plot must be resampled earlier in the growing season to capture herbaceous species prior to senescence and during sexual maturity of dominant sedge. Unlike the other mafic seeps sampled at Buffalo Mountain, this stand contains little Parnassia grandifolia and apparently no Solidago patula. Extraction of mineral component of soil was impossible without considerable local soil disturbance.
From flagged Liriodendron tulipifera (50 cm dbh; located just downstream from plot): 2.9 m @ 78 deg to corner 1.
0 - 25 - organic muck
25 - A horizon begins by this depth; gravelly, generally reduced clay, but with lenses of oxidized soil; by 35 cm soil becomes difficult to penetrate
