Observation Narrative
This barren represents a compositional transition from the open, herbaceous barrens dominated by Schizachyrium scoparium to wooded barrens with Quercus stellata, Juniperus virginiana and Carya ovata. Other species present in the latter type but chiefly absent from the former include Sorghastrum nutans and Carex pensylvanica, whereas lithophytes such as Talinum teretifolium, Lechea racemulosa and Cheilanthes lanosa occur only on scattered small outcrops in the wooded barrens. There is no evidence of ephemeral seepage in this barren, although Rhynchospora globularis is present and some bedrock is exposed. Juniperus and Q. stellata border the open portion of the barren, but beyond the vegetation grades abruptly to closed forest. A narrow draw runs ca. 20 m from the plot to the northwest and is bordered by clumps of Physocarpus opulifolius.
