Observation Narrative
Plot location: along east side of Catletts Branch, 1.08 km NNE of Beverly Mill. Not permanently marked. Rock types present: a few small quartzite fragments.
This plot encompasses two slightly different microhabitats along Catletts Branch: a well-drained terrace flat bordering the stream and a gently sloping toe at the foot of the adjacent slope. In addition, a very small seep occurs within the plot, accounting for the presence of several wetland species. The vegetation here is a mature mesophytic hardwood forest characterized by large-diameter Fagus grandifolia, Liriodendron tulipifera, and Quercus rubra. Although the shrub and herb layers are fairly diverse, the density and total cover of these strata is unusually low because of heavy grazing by white-tailed deer. The most abundant herbs, like Polystichum acrostichoides, are species generally avoided by deer and several herbs that are normally robust have been severely stunted by repeated top-grazing. The plants in this plot that have been damaged by herbivory include Hamamelis virginiana, Lindera benzoin, Carex grisea, Carex laxiculmis var. laxiculmis and Actaea racemosa.
