Observation Narrative
Plot location: just north of saddle in east ridge of Bull Run Mountain, 1.85 km SSE of Hopewell Gap. Marked with a metal tree tag. See form/report for sketch. No surface rocks present.
A fairly mature Quercus montana-dominated forest occupying a slightly convex, upper slope on the north side of a spur ridge saddle. This forest has typically low species richness but has a lower density of ericaceous shrubs than many similar stands. This vegetation and its slightly sheltered habitat contrasts sharply with the stunted, oligotrophic pine / ericad forest occurring on the crest and south side of the ridge (e.g., plot BULL025P).
