Observation Narrative
Plot location: upper east slope of east ridge Bull Run Mountain, below knob 1.1 km ENE of Rt. 629 bridge over Catharpin Creek. Marked with a metal tree tag. See form/report for sketch. Rock types present: flaggy quartzite/ muscovite schist boulders.
This plot is similar to plot BULL030, which is located about 0.50 km to the south on the same eastern flank of the Bull Run Mountain east ridge. However, it occupies a more convex and seemingly drier slope with greater cover of mineral soil exposed by sheet-erosion. The herb layer is relatively dense (ca. 50% cover) and dominated by Ageratina altissima var. altissima and several graminoids (Carex pensylvanica, Danthonia spicata, and Dichanthelium boscii) that are unpalatable to deer. The following plants were heavily damaged by herbivory: Galium circaezans, Galium latifolium, and Viola palmata var. triloba.
