Observation Narrative
Plot location: slope ca. 60 meters east of Rt. 629, 0.61 km ESE of Signal Mountain summit. Marked with a metal tree tag. See form/ report for sketch. Rock types present: quartzite boulders.
Stumps of Castanea dentata, probably cut in the 1920's, indicate that this was once a mixed forest of Castanea dentata and Quercus montana. Now largely dominated by chestnut oak (with scattered Liriodendron tulipifera and Quercus rubra), the stand has a dense sub-canopy of Acer rubrum and a very dense shrub layer dominated by Kalmia latifolia.
