Observation Narrative ? Plot location: slope 150 meters SE of saddle between Jackson Hollow and Hungry Run, 0.74 km NE of Rt. 629 bridge over Catharpin Creek. Marked with a metal tree tag. See form/report for sketch. No surface rocks present. Numerous tree scars and charcoal fragments suggest a history of frequent or severe fires on this infertile slope. The current vegetation is a mixed oak-pine forest with a tall Kalmia latifolia shrub layer. Pinus rigida, Pinus virginiana, Quercus montana, and Quercus coccinea are all relatively common. Pines are essentially confined to the overstory and may represent a slightly older cohort which probably regenerated following a stand-killing fire. Chestnut oaks dominate the sub-canopy layers. Some pine mortality from the southern pine beetle outbreak of the early and mid-1990's was noted outside the plot.
