Observation Narrative
Plot location: NE-facing slope at north end of Bull Run Mountain middle ridge, 0.16 km S of Rt. 629 bridge over Catharpin Creek. Marked with a metal tree tag. See form/report for sketch. Rock types present: minor quartzite debris.
This plot is representative of second-growth Quercus montana- and Kalmia latifolia-dominated forests that cover hundreds of acres on the Bull Run Mountain sideslopes. In spite of thick, root-rich duff and humus and dense understory competition, there is considerable recruitment of young chestnut oak at this site and elsewhere, suggesting that this oak will maintain its dominant position into the future.
