Observation Narrative ? Plot location: west facing slope 1.14 km SW of US Rt. 50 bridge over Little River at Aldie. Not permanently marked. Rock types present: very sparse quartzite fragments. Although many of the trees at this site originated from stump sprouts following logging, at least one huge specimen of Quercus montana (107 cm DBH) escaped cutting. Compositionally, the forest here is representative of large areas in the Bull Run Mountains where Kalmia latifolia forms extensive shrub tangles under Quercus montana-dominated overstories. Although frequently found in this type of vegetation, the orchid Isotria verticillata was unusually numerous and robust in the plot.
