Observation Narrative
Plot location: slope of deep ravine at west foot of High Acre Ridge, 0.65 km SSW of the summit. Marked with a metal tree tag. See form/report for sketch. Rock types present: sparse phyllite, quartzite, and quartzite fragments.
Castanea dentata was once a dominant or major associate tree on this NW-facing ravine slope. The current stand has a mixed canopy of Quercus montana, Quercus rubra, Liriodendron tulipifera, and Carya glabra. This is also one of a very few sites in the Bull Run Mountains where Betula lenta thrives. The dominance of large specimens of Rhododendron periclymenoides in the shrub layer is also unusual among plot samples from the area. Some selective cutting took place on this slope within the past few decades.
