Observation Narrative
Plot location: west slope of High Point Mtn., 2.27 km NNW of Beverly Mill. Marked with a metal tree tag. See form/report for sketch.
Rock types present: quartzite, muscovite schist debris.
The vegetation in this plot is a rather dry forest with a mixed overstory of Quercus alba, Quercus montana, Quercus rubra, Quercus velutina, and some Liriodendron tulipifera. Carya spp. and young oaks dominate the understory. This sample has notably high species richness for such a dry, seemingly infertile site. The herb layer, though very diverse, has been heavily impacted by deer grazing, with herbivory noted on Carex digitalis, Carex laxiflora, Actaea racemosa, Galium circaezans, Galium latifolium, Galium triflorum, Polygonatum biflorum var. biflorum, Scutellaria elliptica, Packera paupercula, and Viola palmata var. triloba.
