Observation Narrative
Plot location: upper east slope of High Point Mtn., 0.82 km NNW of Beverly Mill. Marked with a metal tree tag. See form/report for sketch. Rock types present: minor phyllite / muscovite schist debris.
Quercus montana and Carya tomentosa are the most abundant overstory trees in this dry-mesic oak-hickory forest, which also contains some Quercus alba, Quercus velutina, and Carya ovalis (not in plot). Climbing and scrambling lianas, especially of Vitis aestivalis var. bicolor, are prominent in the subcanopy and shrub layers. Soils, apparently derived from flaggy quartzite/muscovite schist/phyllite lithologic suite, have relatively high base status and support a diverse array of herbaceous plants. Herb cover, however, is reduced by herbivory. Although present in moderate numbers in the plot, Cynoglossum virginianum var. virginianum forms thick colonies nearby and is able to thrive because it is unpalatable to deer. The following plants were damaged by herbivory: Symphyotrichum patens var. patens, Carex laxiflora, Actaea racemosa, Cornus florida, Eupatorium sessilifolium var. sessilifolium, Galium circaezans, Galium triflorum, Lindera benzoin, Phryma leptostachya, Scutellaria elliptica, Solidago caesia, and Solidago ulmifolia.
