Observation Narrative
Plot location: crest of High Point Mtn., 0.80 km NW of Beverly Mill. Marked with a metal tree tag. See form/report for sketch. Rock types present: quartzite debris.
The sampling site is a gentle crest of High Point Mountain with oligotrophic soils and a history of fire. Current forest growth is a nearly pure stand of Quercus montana, consisting of scattered old specimens (>65 cm DBH) and a cohort of younger trees 20 to 35 cm DBH. Excellent recruitment of this oak is also present in sapling and shrub-sized classes, but seedlings were not found. The deciduous ericads Vaccinium pallidum and Gaylussacia baccata dominate the shrub and herb layers.
