Observation Narrative
Stand of large, scattered Fagus grandifolia, Quercus spp., and Liriodendron tulipifera with characteristically sparse herb layer on sheltered ravine slope. Kalmia latifolia and Ilex opaca form patchy shrub layer. Microtopography is undulating, and aspect ranges from ca. 40 deg in portions of modules 5 and 6, beyond which slope dips toward Bush Mill Stream, to ca. 170 deg in portions of modules 1 and 10. Slope length (perpendicular to long axis of plot) from bottom of ravine to more gently rolling plateau is only ca. 35-40 m. Oak-beech / heath vegetation such as this is typical of locally steep relief associated with narrow ravine systems on the Northern Neck.
