Observation Narrative
Sample is mostly Quercus alba with scattered Quercus falcata and Liriodendron. Oxydendrum is the most common subcanopy species. Herbs and shrubs are sparse possibly due to deer browse. Overall stand is not as xeric as this sample, but has similar composition with large Carya alba, Liriodendron, Quercus alba and also Quercus falcata, Fraxinus, and Quercus rubra. Oxydendrum and Carpinus are throughout stand. Grades downslope to floodplain of Gill's Creek.
This knob is the only location of Pinus pungens in the Park. Species is not within sample but 2 individuals are nearby as are scattered Pinus virginiana. Adjacent stand is decadent Pinus virginiana.
Euonymus is severely browsed by deer; cut pine and cedar stumps.
Old erosion gullies in area indicate area may have been previously farmed or cleared. Rock piles and rocks at the surface in some areas on slope.
