Observation Narrative
Second-growth Montane Dry Calcareous Forest/Woodland adjacent to exemplary Limestone/Dolomite Barren. A sufficient area of homogeneous, undisturbed vegetation could not be located for the establishment of a 0.1 ha plot. To the west and south vegetation becomes much more open, grading abruptly into an evidently much younger Juniperus woodland. Adjacent to plot on the east side (toward CEDA002P), canopy thins due to gap and opening below intermittent stream. Module 3 nevertheless captures some Lonicera japonica in this opening. Relatively large (30-35 cm) Quercus alba and Carya ovata stand immediately outside plot to the north (upslope) and east, respectively. Few other large Q. stellata seem to be present in the vicinity. Plot contains Packera millefolium, P. anonyma, and the hybrid P. x memmingeri. The last two taxa were not identified in the field and their presence in nested subquadrats is not
recorded. Soil depth measurements made 1999-09-21 may be inaccurately low due to extreme soil desiccation.
