Observation Narrative
Extraordinarily diverse dry calcareous forest on SSE-NNW trending ridge on Wynn tract at the Cedars NAP. This particular stand appears quite small. Fenceline runs perpendicular to ridge < 15 m from far (SSE) end of plot; although this fence does not mark the boundary of the preserve, abrupt land-use change is evident, and grazing has been intense on other side. To the NNW the vegetation quickly (within ca. 20-30 m) into considerably less diverse and evidently younger stand, with fewer large trees, more pole-sized individuals, and a denser shrub layer. Microtopography is uneven throughout, and a small sinkhole is present on the edge of module 6. Exposed bedrock has fractured into stones, which was considered the expression of lithologic substrate. Probe was insufficiently strong to measure soil depth. David Richert collected tree data from the residual modules and Philip Coulling collected the remainder.
