Observation Narrative
Stand was probably logged 50-75 years ago and may have been selectively cut since then. Almost no trees, however, are multi-stemmed or evidently of sprout origin. This vegetation appears representative of the ridgecrest along the Tennessee Valley Divide, although little of this area has yet been explored. Plot believed to have been moved from Kentucky fully into Virginia, but portion of plot and nearly half of hectare still lies across the state line. Quercus velutina is the leading overstory dominant, but is nearly absent from subcanopy strata. Quercus prinus occurs in almost every stratum and has much more regeneration than any other canopy species. A few snags are present, and several overstory trees exhibit signs of past wind or ice damage. Uneven microtopography resulted in inclusion of slight convexity in the center of the plot. Saddle lies upslope; crest of ridge is outside hectare.
Directions: Follow Lewis Hollow Trail north (upslope) to Ridge Trail. Proceed west on Ridge Trail for ca. 250 m (past Sugar Run Trail). Look for ridgeline intersecting main ridge (along which state line runs) on the left. Point located ca. 85 m up this ridge (southeast of Ridge Trail). Part of plot and nearly half of hectare lies in Kentucky. Tagged tree is a Carya glabra of 33.5 cm dbh with tag #164. Conduit is at a bearing of 340 degrees and 4 m from tree.
