Observation Narrative
Quercus velutina, Carya ovalis, Carya cordiformis, and Liriodendron tulipifera canopy with Cercis canadensis, Magnolia acuminata, and Cornus florida as subcanopy. Sassafras albidum as a shrub with open shrub layer. Dominant herbs are Actaea racemosa, Amphicarpaea bracteata, Dichanthelium boscii. Similar forests on slope surrounding sample, but with some Quercus alba, Q. prinus, and more Liriodendron tulipifera. Some hickories were ambiguous, only seedling was C. cordiformis. Probably mostly C. ovalis, although some may be C. alba.
Directions to plot: Take Gibson Gap Trail S from Gibson Gap approx. 1 mi. Witness tree is approx. 150-200 ft S and W of trail. A large Q. velutina at base of slope on a small flat area just before a steep face to East. Flagging was left near conduit. Tagged tree is a Quercus velutina of 67 cm dbh with tag #171. Conduit is at a bearing of 86 degrees and 2m from tree.
