Observation Narrative
Steep concavity between two side slopes, just below the ridgeline. Trees in sample are younger than the trees on side ridges, presumably from past disturbance due to soil movement on steep slope. Canopy primarily Carya ovalis/glabra. Subcanopy of Oxydendrum, Sassafras albidum, Quercus alba. 2 large Q. prinus in sample. Herb cover is dense. Most common herb is Dichanthelium boscii. Area with rock outcroppings and Q. prinus, Q. alba and Q. rubra (although not much in sample). 2 large Q. alba in sample but canopy primarily Carya.
Directions to Plot: Off Ridge Trail, East of Butcher's Gap. Take Ridge trail ca. 0.25 mi. NE of Butcher's Gap to 2 large boulders on either side of trail and head downslope at about 150 degrees. Conduit is approx. 50m downslope from trail. Tagged tree is Carya ovalis of about 35cm dbh with tag #148. Conduit is at a bearing of 76 degrees and 5m from tree.
