Observation Narrative
Concave steep slope beneath limestone boulder/cliff face. Large trees of Quercus rubra and Q. alba with secondary canopy of Acer rubrum and Oxydendrum arboreum. Shrub layer very open with scattered Oxydendrum arboreum and a few Carya. Herb layer very dense and dominated by ferns, mostly Thelypteris noveboracensis, but locally dominated by Osmunda cinnamomea in the most concave portion where there may possibly be seepage in non-drought years. Beneath ferns, Viola hastata dominates with much Ageratina altissima and Collinsonia canadensis growing above the fern layer.
