Observation Narrative
Topographic variation complicated plot placement, and long axis does not parallel contour. Small ravine bisects hectare, and one corner of plot falls in the ravine. ATV trail, which appears to have been used within the last year, runs through the far end of the plot. Overstory composition of mixed Quercus, Carya, and Liriodendron tulipifera seems consistent throughout stand. Stand was likely logged decades ago, but neither stumps nor multi-stemmed boles are evident. Coarse woody debris is probably the result of mild wind damage. No extant gaps are present. Identification of Magnolia spp. was suspect; M. fraseri may have been present in addition to other three species, which would likely represent an unprecedented Magnolia richness.
Directions: Follow unpaved road along Roaring Branch to gate at end of navigability. (Look for house on left slope.) Walk west ca. 100 m to ravine, then bear NW for ca. 230 m to point. Plot located on broad, SE-facing slope on west side of cove. Tagged tree is a Carya glabra of 42 cm with tag #157. Conduit is at a bearing of 20 degrees and 3 m from tree.
