Observation Narrative
A medium-age, second-growth oak-hickory forest situated on a dry-mesic, south-facing slope bordering the Keysville Reservoir. This is one of the most mature forest stands in the area, having apparently escaped the most recent logging events. Recruitment of oaks (except for white oak seedlings) is very poor in this area; hickories are the most abundant understory trees. Soils at this site are strongly acidic and low in base status. True herbaceous plants are rather sparse and most of the ground layer is composed of tree and shrub seedlings. Moderate to heavy levels of herbivory by white-tail deer were observed, and this may also contribute to the paucity of herbaceous species.
