Observation Narrative
A fresh interdune pond of irregular proportions, situated among sheltered back dunes southeast of Ragged Point. The plot is representative of the western lobe of this pond, in which Scirpus cyperinus dominates; the eastern lobe is somewhat drier and supports a nearly pure stand of Cladium mariscoides. Surficial deposits of organic muck in the plot habitat are several cm deeper than in most similar ponds of Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, which may contribute to somewhat eutrophic conditions. Similar Scirpus cyperinus-dominated wetlands occur on the Refuge in seasonal ponds and depressions along the foot of the "White Hills" dune ridge.
Plot located ca. 0.9 mi southeast of Cherrytree Hill.
