Observation Narrative
The forest community here occupies a broad, seasonally flooded valley between two back dune ridges and is characterized by deciduous trees and expansive colonies of Woodwardia virginica. Pinus taeda occurs primarily on hummocks and edges. The nutrient regime is distinctly oligotrophic and floristic diversity is low. This and related community types are found frequently throughout the Virginia Coastal Plain.
Plot located in swampy interdunal valley ca. 140 m ENE of fee booths.
