Observation Narrative
This plot represents what probably can be considered an herbaceous variant of the Baccharis halimifolia - Iva frutescens alliance. Distichlis spicata, Hibiscus moscheutos and Spartina patens are the characteristic species of an elongate herbaceous opening, located near the upland edge of a salt marsh complex and surrounded by Iva frutescens-dominated shrublands. The abundance of Distichlis spicata in the fresh to oligohaline wetland is somewhat unusual. Halinity may have been reduced by very heavy rain during the preceding 24 hours.
Plot located in the extreme upper reaches of Black Duck Creek marsh, 50 m north of woodland trail at a point ca. 0.5 mi northwest of parking area and 0.9 m southwest of refuge office.
