Observation Narrative
An open Pinus taeda woodland confined in Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge to xeric, sheltered back dunes. Best development occurs on the high and steep "White Hills" dune ridge. Here the pines are notably stunted (5-10 m tall), with canopy cover in the 25-50% range. Shrub and herbaceous growth is very sparse; Hudsonia tomentosa, Aristida tuberculosa and Dichanthelium ovale var. ovale are probably the most widespread and characteristic species. This is a rare community type in Virginia.
Plot located on southeast-facing slope of steep, thinly wooded dune, ca. 20 m upslope from sand road and 0.6 mi southeast of the mouth of Janeys Creek.
