Observation Narrative
The plot represents vegetation occurring in wooded interdunal swales in a sheltered back dune area southeast of Ragged Point. More or less open, young Pinus taeda woodland occupies these habitats. Shrubs are very sparse and the herbaceous layer is dominated by clonal patches of Vaccinium macrocarpon and/or patches of graminoids. A number of light-demanding, acid-loving plants (e.g., Vaccinium macrocarpon, Drosera intermedia, Xyris torta, Rhynchospora spp., Eupatorium leucolepis) occur in this and other swales, suggesting "bog" vegetation. These species also suggest open conditions, and the pines may be the product of relatively recent succession. This community type can be considered very rare in Virginia.
Plot located in interdunal depression 0.9 mi ESE of Cherrytree Hill.
