Observation Narrative
This alluvial floodplain supports a mature, mixed hardwood forest with trees up to 139 cm dbh. Acer saccharinum is the most abundant tree in the mixture with Acer negundo, Ulmus americana, Platanus occidentalis, Celtis occidentalis and Fraxinus pennsylvanica. Soils are well drained and apparently quite fertile, supporting a relatively lush and diverse herbaceous flora.
Plot located in floodplain of the Shenandoah River, just northwest of the riverbank at a point 0.15 mi northeast of Byrd Bridge (US 50).
