Observation Narrative
This is one of the largest intact calcareous spring marshes in Virginia, covering 5 acres or more. Harshly alkaline seepage from a massive head spring and several lateral springs creates favorable habitat for several rare plants and breeding populations of both Virginia and sora rails. The community represented by this plot covers ca. 2 acres along the more shallowly inundated margins and lower section of the marsh. It is dominated by the larger of only two known populations of Carex rostrata in the state. Water depth 2-6 in at time of sampling.
Plot located on north edge of marsh, 0.15 mi northwest of N&W Railroad and 0.4 mi NNW of Gaylord.
